Man, 37, is charged with attempted murder after ‘popular’ nurse stabbed ‘with a pair of scissors’ on busy A&E ward
A man has been charged with attempted murder after a nurse was stabbed at an NHS hospital.
Rumon Haque, 37, was charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article after the alleged attack at the Royal Oldham Hospital on Saturday.
Haque, of Royton, Oldham, Greater Manchester, was remanded in custody to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning.
The female staff member, in her 50s, is in a critical condition in Royal Oldham Hospital where the attack took place at 11.30pm.
The nurse was left with ‘life changing’ injuries after she was allegedly assaulted in the Acute Medical Unit, attached to the accident and emergency department, at the hospital.
It is believed that she was attacked with a sharp instrument that was not a knife.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said that the nurse had been stabbed with a pair of scissors.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting described nurses as ‘the backbone of our NHS’ after hearing of the woman’s injuries.

Detective Sergeant Craig Roters, from the force’s Oldham district, previously said in a statement: ‘This is a serious incident which has left a woman in a critical condition.
‘Our thoughts are with her family and colleagues, and we will continue to support them throughout this investigation.
‘The local community can expect to see an increase in police presence whilst we carry out enquiries, but they are also there to offer reassurance and answer any questions you may have.
‘We know that news of this nature will come as a shock, and if you have any concerns or anything you would like to share, please speak to them.’
A colleague who did not wish to be named said he had known the nurse for around ten years and described her as a ‘lovely lady’, The Sun reports.
He said: ‘She’s in her 50s and has two children and is an active and popular member of the community in Oldham.
‘She’s a very nice lady and is a member of the Indian Association Oldham (IAO)’.
He added that staff at the hospital have been ‘shocked’ by the stabbing.

It is understood that Haque became angry after having to wait to be seen in the acute medical ward.
The force has said that they are not looking for anyone else in connection to the stabbing.
Detective Superintendent Matt Walker, of Greater Manchester Police, said: ‘Our thoughts are with the nurse as she continues to receive treatment in hospital for her injuries, and our priority remains supporting her, her family, and her colleagues at this difficult time.
‘We continue to work closely with our NHS colleagues to support anyone who has been affected by this incident.’
