The Full Wolf Moon will illuminate skies worldwide tonight, peaking at 22:27 GMT, according to NASA. This alignment will cause Mars to briefly disappear from view in parts of North America, Africa, Canada, and Mexico. NASA explained, “On the night of the full Moon, the Moon will pass in front of the planet Mars.”
Adding to the excitement, comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) will become visible for the first time in 160,000 years. Discovered by the ATLAS survey system, this comet will make its closest approach to the sun at a distance of about 8.3 million miles. Although far by human standards, this proximity classifies it as a “sun-skirter” among astronomers.
Astronomers have been eagerly anticipating the comet’s approach, which is expected to peak around January 13, 2025. Dr. Shyam Balaji, an expert in astroparticle physics at King’s College London, noted that comet visibility is often unpredictable. Factors such as weather conditions and the comet’s behavior will affect how well it can be observed from Earth.
The moon’s phases follow a 29.5-day cycle, transitioning from a new moon to a full moon and back again. Each phase reveals a different portion of the moon’s illuminated side, depending on its position relative to the Earth and sun. NASA described, “Like Earth, the Moon has a day side and a night side, which change as the Moon rotates.”
